Create the conditions for bravery
Focus on building a warm-demanding environment for kids to try what's hard for them.
Brave Warm-Up
Brave Warm-Ups will get BODY, MINDS, & EMOTIONS ready to GO for practice. They should be:
- 8-12 minutes long
- packed with enthusiasm and reps
- aimed at kids getting emotionally ready to try things outside of their comfort and competency zones
WARM-UP 1
Body: Over-back runs - x 6 (15-20 yards)
1. Jog over, run back clapping
2. Jog over, run back screaming
3. Jog over, back peddle back clapping (x2)
4. Joy over, back peddle to start > pivot to run straight back screaming (x2)
Mind: High-5 slides (groups of 3: 10-12Â yards apart, outside people put hands out)
1st round (all three kids each go for :08-:12 seconds): Side to Side (x3)
1. Eyes up (peripheral)Slap hands without looking
2. Say “BOOM” (inside and outside people)
2nd round: Figure 8 (x3)

2. Breakdown steps around postÂ
Emotions: 2-sided shuttle lines
4 commands for passing type: Overhand, groundball, flip, bounce
1. Round 1: 1-2 minutes: call commands out loud (working on quick transitions)
2. Round 2: 1-3 minutes: whisper quietly commands and let the girls communicate it to the rest of the team (working on quick transitions
WARM-UP 2
Body: 1 lap around field (with sticks, goggles, mouthguards in)
1. Whole team does a lap around the field (SLOWLY) determining what word they are going to scream (and accelerate for) over the last 30 yards into the coach.
2. The coach has to guess the word.
Mind: In partners, alternate between knee slapping and hugs/high-5s/affirmations
1st round (all three kids each go for :08-:12 seconds): Side to Side (x3)
1. 4x :08-10
Emotions: A and B 2-sided shuttle lines
4 commands for lax passing/catching (review from Warm-Up1): Overhand, groundball, flip, bounce
2 commands for non-stick passing/catching: Overhand, underhand.
1. Round 1: (A line) standard 2-sided shuttle with all four calls from Warm-Up 1)
2. Round 2: (B line) sticks in non-dominant hands with underhand throwing and catching with ball in dominant hand (carrying stick in one hand, passing/catching the ball with NO stick at all in other hand)
3. Round 3: Alternate between A + B and get kids to do it seamlessly, so transition doesn’t require anyone to stop moving
4. BONUS round: Alternate which lines are doing A and which are doing B (so 2 lines next to each other are doing different things) and when you blow the whistle, they have to change what they are doing (line next to them is opposite).
